Business Networking: Treat it Like a First Date

With Valentine's day right around the corner, a similarity popped into mind between business networking and dating.

I know we all have been given pointers by our friends and Vogue magazine on proper conduct on a first date. Most of that advice can be applied at networking events. Instead of making you go to the magazine aisle for the newest issue of Seventeen (P.S. Is that still in print?), I'll spout them out here.

1. Avoid Religion. That's a big 'no no' on first dates and should also be avoided in networking conversation. The last thing you want to do is get in a Jesus debate with someone you just met. You could offend them... and you can be sure they won't remember you as Mike the Carpenter, but as Mike the Anti-Semitic jerk.

(Get it... carpenter... Jesus... ok, moving on.)

Just keep it light. Obviously, it's okay to mention things in

passing-- "Oh, I know where that is... we pass it on the way to church." Use your common sense.

2. Avoid Politics. Yes, another biggie. Of course, in this election year, it's on the brain. It may seem like it's a "how about this weather..." kind of topic, but IT'S NOT. We all have opinions on the upcoming election and why candidate 'so-and-so' is the right choice, but leave the living room politics at home.

3. Salaries. Duh... but don't ask how much money someone makes. Rude.

4. Don't Get Personal. SO many reasons not to bring up "relationships." If you ask about someone's significant other, they may get the wrong idea and think you're hitting on them.

You could also hit on a sore subject. "Oh, aren't you Brad's wife... oh... you did... sorry to hear that..." Yeah. AWKWARD. Keep it professional. If something along those lines enters into the conversation, it needs to be them to bring it up.

On the opposite end of this, don't be the guy showing 18 million pictures of your newborn baby on your smartphone to a complete stranger. Unless it's dressed up in animal costumes. Especially a lobster costume. That would be funny.

5. Don't be a chatterbox. No one wants to listen to someone rattle on forever about themselves. It needs to be a dialogue. Keep your answers on the shorter side.

6. Keep it positive. Nothing is worse than being on a first date with someone who is trying to compete with Eeyore. Yes, we all have our fair share of stresses in our lives, but don't bring them up while networking. Smile and try to enjoy yourself.

Networking is like a first date. You're auditioning to continue to be in someone's business life, whether it be just linked-in buddies or a long-term client.

Be polite and upbeat... and follow the rules.

Networking Event Manners

It's almost the 3 year anniversary for Wilmington Young Professionals. I've had the opportunity to host at least one event for WYP every month and have attended many other networking group events in the past few years.

If you haven't been to a networking event before and are just following this blog because of my fantastic writing style, let me set the stage. The events are normally at restaurants (or it's an outside venue that gets catered). Normally, appetizers are usually donated for the group and sometimes even wine/beer is provided. There isn't a cost to attend, so people are networking for free unless they buy additional food/beverages. Attendance varies per group and event-- we usually average about 100-150.

All that being said, the host restaurant/venue puts in a lot of extra work to prep for the event and usually brings in additional help to ensure that the event runs smoothly.

One thing that I've noticed happening during some events has disturbed me. I have seen it several times... but it baffles me every time.

Attendees being rude to the waitstaff.

Being rude to the waitstaff for "small pours" or slow service is the most common. Think on this:

A. They're working extra hard so that you can grow your business...for free.

B. Do you realize how unprofessional that looks? If you really feel like you were given poor treatment from the staff, pull the host of the group aside and inform them.

Personally, when I see someone announce to the members around them about slow service, it makes me not want to do business with them. If they are going to be that rude in public over not getting their Yuengling, I'd be afraid they'd do that in a professional relationship.

Food for thought.

P.S. No, this didn't happen at our last event. Carolina Farmin' had amazing food and staff---I thought it was wonderful that I witnessed so many members expressing their gratitude to our Host venue for their efforts that night. Classy.

How to Network if you are SHY

I hear at least once or twice per event "I've been a member of the group for a year now, but haven't ever mustered up the courage to come until now."

The thought of networking can definitely be intimidating if you've never been before... especially if you are normally shy. GEEKS... yes, I'm talking to you.

So how do you overcome your shyness to be an effective networker?

1. You are not alone!
Everyone else is there to network, too! They are all there to talk... so don't be afraid to strike up a conversation. Don't let the people that look like "regulars" intimidate you. Most of the Wilmington Young Professionals Events have averaged 25% new people.

2. Pick an event that suits you.
Are you a wine enthusiast? Go to a networking event with a wine tasting. Do you feel more comfortable at seminars where you can reflect and discuss with others afterward? Maybe there's a restaurant that you love to go to... even the venue can help put you at ease.

3. Bring a friend.
Most newbies tend to bring a pal. Makes complete sense. If a friendly face is already with you, you'll be more comfortable.

4. Talk to the host!
If I ever look lonely at the front waiting for new people to arrive, PLEASE come talk to me. :) Your host can introduce you to members and sometimes, even people that will benefit your business. There's no rule that says you can't ask the host for "help." They usually know the majority of attendees, so they're a good tool to have.

Wilmington Young Professionals has been invited to attend "[life:affirmed]" on Friday, April 29th!

The mission of [life:affirmed] was to create a collection of original photographic portraits of cancer survivors for public exhibition to raise awareness of the various forms of cancer while portraying an optimistic view of the fight against cancer.

One of Wilmington Young Professionals own, Josh Parker has teamed up with Britt Motorsports and Cancer Connects to create this event.

The exhibit will be on display at Britt Motorsports, Wilmington from 6 PM to 9 PM on April 29th and will be available to travel to hospitals, clinics, charitable events, support groups and cancer awareness events across North Carolina.

I am happy to invite the WYPs to such an inspirational event (and to give us a networking option on a Friday night, which so many of you have asked for!)

How do WYP events work?

With all of the new faces that I've seen at events and with all of the new members joining on FB, I thought I would make sure everyone knew how Wilmington Young Professionals events work.

There are NO dues to join. A lot of networking organizations charge dues, but I believe that these events should be free and provide a service to local businesses. Sponsors help cover our costs for food and other expenses. If members want to purchase beverages or additional food, then they may.

For the Business After Hours events:

1. RSVP on Facebook, then show up! That's all you have to do to be a "member."

2. Bring business cards!

3. You can invite whomever you want. ALL are invited. Anyone who can benefit from business networking is invited. WYP was founded and is run by young professionals, but people of all ages are allowed.

4. If you're new, introduce yourself to the redhead at the sign-in table. She'll get you acquainted. :)

Networking: TOO Much Follow-up?!

We know we want to keep contact with those potential business prospects... but what is too much?

We have all had it happen. That person that calls your cell phone every few days asking to meet, sign on their services, etc. They may THINK that they are super organized and following up effectively, but YOU-- their prospective client-- think that they are harassing. You may even goes as far as to tell people to NOT do business with this overachiever.

If you're new to networking/ following-up, here are some tips that may help:

1. Think about HOW you follow-up. Make sure that you're not just pushing your product in your follow-up. Build rapport by asking about their business or perhaps some other things you discussed while meeting them. Taking notes on the back of their business card after your first connection is a great way to remember talking points. People will be more likely to get back to you if you seem to have an interest in them that is more than merely selling your own services.

2. Respect the way they want to follow-up. Email is always a good starting point. Phone calls can be too aggressive, so if you're not sure which is their preferred communication-- go with email. Now, if you add someone to a newsletter, make sure that they have a way to opt-out.

3. Know when to call it quits. If someone is not getting back to you... it means they're probably not interested! Don't take it personally... perhaps they already have a hair stylist or interior decorator. You can't win them all. You should lay off on the emails and phone calls, because you don't want to alienate them. If you do follow up with them again... keep it personal-- perhaps ask what networking event they're going to next. Help out their business. Who knows... perhaps their situation will change.

4. Oh, Facebook... Facebook is a GREAT way to have that follow-up connection without picking up the phone. Send them a message via FB or friend request. Now keep in mind, not everyone wants to use their facebook for business, so respect that and don't be offended if they don't accept your request. If the event was publicized on FB, write on the wall of the networking group, so that the people that you met might want to friend you. It's also a great way of reminding potential clients what you do with business related posts without singling them out directly.

You ALWAYS Represent Your Business

Here's a tip: if you have road rage, DO NOT put your business information on your car.

May seem simple enough, but I can't tell you how many times I've been cut off by someone that advertises on their car.
If you wake up and you decide that you're going to drive like an idiot that day, take your car magnet off. Just because you're technically not doing "business", doesn't mean that people aren't deciding whether or not they would WANT to do business with you. I don't know about you, but I'm not about to call someone to clean my blinds that was flashing their lights at me all the way down Market Street. And I promise you... people tell their friends about the moron that cut them off.

Make sure you are always putting your best foot forward when you can be connected to your business. Whether you're wearing a company logo on your shirt, driving the company car, or maybe just drinking from a water bottle with your logo on it. That water bottle may be a conversation starter... so perhaps leave the "2010 Beer Pong Championships" t-shirt at home? Although... that might be a conversation starter, too--- but PROBABLY won't lead to a successful business relationship.

Just think of it this way: When you're representing any business, you're never truly "off the clock." There's a reason why waitstaff in restaurants have to change out of their uniforms before going to the bar for their post shift pint.

So please for your business' sake, before you flick someone off: pull over, get out of your car, take the magnet off, and THEN give someone the bird.

Leave your troubles behind!!

You've had a bad day.

Your boss yelled at you. Your deadline got pushed up. You're running late. Your pantyhose ripped getting out of the car. Your babysitter cancelled. Your hair looks like crap. Your wife keeps nagging at you about the broken dishwasher. You didn't get the promotion. You got a parking ticket. You had 3 clients cancel on you. You didn't get to the bank in time. You ran out of coffee and forgot to get more at the store. Well. I'm very sorry to tell you this... but---

NO ONE CARES.

When you're going to a networking event, leave your troubles behind. This isn't a time to complain. We all have stress in our lives, but when you walk into a networking event, it's "showtime." It's time to put your best foot foward and show the other people there that you're a friendly and positive person to do business with.

This has probably happened to you in your life and you were thinking "Why is this total stranger telling me about their problems?" Don't bore people.

Just leave your troubles at the door, relax, and try to have fun!

Who KNOWS what you do??

Yes, I'm going to start off with a reference from "Friends."

In one episode of a show I know 99.9% of us watched, Monica suggests a trivia contest to settle a bet: if the women win, the guys have to give up their noisy farm animals; if not, the guys get their apartment.

The scores are tied through most of the game, but the last question — “What is Chandler Bing’s job?” — is as much a mystery to the women as it was for fans of the show. Even know Monica and Rachel have known Chandler for years, they couldn't even name the title of his occupation. Rachel desperately guesses “a transpondster!” (Monica: “THAT’S NOT EVEN A WORD!”), and they lose the apartment.

This blog post is dedicated to those seasoned networkers... who REALLY knows what you do? For those of you that have been out to various networking events in the past months or years, are you SURE that the people that you "network" with really understand your profession enough to recommend you to one of there contacts? If not, you might as well not be networking, because that person will remember you as "Didn't that Mike person do something in a warehouse..."

Now, this being said... how do you get the people that you network with to really know and understand what you do?

For some of us it's easy... "Hi, I'm Cynthia White Lee an I'm an owner of Moxie Design Floral Studio." We know that Cynthia owns a floral shop... so we've met someone that we can recommend for Floral arrangements, weddings, etc. (And I do... Cynthia and Djenana own a fantastic artistic floral studio downtown Wilmington... yes, shameless plug, but their work is the most creative I've ever seen!)

For some of us... it's not. Not everyone will be able to understand your business or profession just based on your business card. Make sure you add details on exactly what you do. Sarah Barbee instead of just saying "I own Fussbudget Promotions-- we specialize in social media management", she would explain a little more about what social media management is and how she creates and manages Twitter, Facebook, and blog accounts for various clients. Sarah does a great job of explaining her company's purpose and even includes more detail on her business card-- an excellent cliff note for those individuals who leave a single networking event with thirty business cards. The more information you have on your card (website, blog, facebook website) the better... just in case anyone wants to do their "homework" on you after the event.

Make sure that when you leave that networking event, that the people that you spoke with actually KNOW what you do.

My advice: make sure you really know what THEY do first.

WYP: One Year Corporate Sponsor Free!!

It's been one year since Wilmington Young Professionals has been without a corporate sponsor. For those of you that don't know the story, I created this group last February to provide a way for other young professionals in the port city to network and expand their businesses. I was the Business Development Officer for a local investment firm that financially backed WYP. Unfortunately, the company disbanded last August, but I couldn't bear to part with the group!

Thankfully, Wilmington has been extremely supportive! A good number of the restaurants that have hosted our Business After Hours events started to donate food. Local businesses have even sometimes let me pay them in marketing services for door prizes, event space, etc.

Without a company financially supporting WYP, I started accepting sponsorships from local businesses in exchange for table space at events and marketing. It was a great compromise-- allowing companies to get their name out to the group and allowing me to be able to financially support our events.

So I just want to take a moment to commemorate the past year's success and thank the people that have allowed it all to happen!

Since I decided when I created the group that I didn't want to charge membership dues, your donations are extremely important to keeping the group running. I have never financially benefitted from the group directly, but I am pleased to say that I connected with 100% of my marketing clients because of Wilmington Young Professionals.

Because of you we have been able to have numerous business after hours events, fundraisers for local charities, and participate in volunteer events.

Your gifts have allowed us to help promote local nonprofits and make sizeable donations to local charities.

I am extremely thankful to all of you that help this group thrive. I hope that this networking group has allowed your business to gain exposure and helped you to make valueable connections in Wilmington.

Dress for the Job You Want

How do you dress for networking events?

Think about the image you're projecting.

How to choose the outfit that's right for you:

1. Don't wear something you're not used to! If you never wear suits, you may be uncomfortable and look awkward. If you don't usually wear high heels and don't walk well in them, wear a cute ballerina flat or a low heel.

2. If it's your first time networking with a particular group, ask around to see how other people are dressed. You don't want to overdress or underdress. When in doubt, business casual is always acceptable. Guys: dress pants/khakis, collared shirt. Girls: Skirt/slacks and blouse.

3. Does it fit?? Make sure this is something you've worn before. You don't want something too tight or too big. Make sure it's your size, so that you're comfortable.

4. Do you feel like you look good? If you do... then you'll be more confident!

5. But remember... there isn't a dress code! You can be more stylish that you can usually get away with at the office. Feel free to add something that will make you stand out... bold color high heels, sharp tie, etc.

Are You Twitter Selfish?

Okay, many of you haven't hopped on the twitter wagon. You probably don't get the hype and don't understand the difference between twitter and a facebook newsfeed. This is an entirely different conversation that I'll gladly have with you.

This post is for people that are on twitter for business-- specifically if you own your business.

How many people do you follow?

I have seen tons of my "tweeps" (yes, go ahead and laugh) having hundreds of follows, but maybe only follow one or two people... perhaps none!

If you're trying to get your business out there using twitter... think about the message you're sending when you aren't following anyone- (I care about getting my business out there... but don't care about yours.)

People are more inclined to retweet your posts if you have retweeted theirs... and you can't do that if they aren't in your feed.

So... show some twitter love and follow.

Is Your Facebook Profile Hurting Your Business?

The majority of businesses are hopping on the Facebook wagon- whether it be through fan, group, or just their profile pages.

Social media is growing in popularity... but not all the newbies are aware how to use it. Yes, it's great for your business to be linked to your personal profile... since we all like to do business with those we "know."

Think... is your personal profile hurting your business? Do you have personal pictures that you wouldn't want a client/employer/employee to see? Do you use unprofessional language?

If you want to keep your facebook profile personal, that's totally fine. You don't have to mesh the two worlds. Then, be careful which friends you accept.

Also, what are your privacy settings? Can anyone, not just friends, see your profile? Can they read what your friends are writing on your wall? If you're keeping your profile away from your professional life, then make sure no one can do a search for you and see incriminating info.

So, if you DO decide you want to friend clients/ employers-- keep it professional. It's okay to let a little personality out, just always keep it in the back of your mind who's watching.

Networking through local businesses

First off, apologies on the three month hiatus!

As I've been out and about with my own networking, a thought occurred to me that I needed to make sure that new networkers were aware of.

Wilmington is a fairly unique town when it comes to networking... since we're so small yet so large at the same town. Tons of restaurants and shops... (thanks to tourists for that summer income) and all of them at arms reach.

I've only been here less than two years and I can't go out anywhere without seeing someone I know. THAT's where we're small.

I've gotten to know tons of local business owners over this past year and if I had to to take one thing that I've learned from them it's: the importance of word of mouth.

Wilmingtonians are PROUD of our town. We love our shops. We love our restaurants. Buy from them. Get to know them... because they KNOW PEOPLE. They know the town. They know who YOU need to network with. Stop cold calling and just walk in.

You refer people to them... and I guarrantee... they'll refer people to you.

Facebook Networking?

Some people think I'm crazy for "friending" people I've never met. If I get a friend request, I'll add them if they have joined WYP or we have plenty of mutual friends.

Facebook doesn't have to be just personal. More businesses are hopping on the band wagon, creating fan pages, and networking online. So how does it work?

Think about it... you go to a business after hours... talk to someone for 20 minutes, shove their card in your purse/pocket, and it sits in a nice stack on your desk. The networking doesn't have to wait until the next time you meet (and you probably have no recollection of what they do)... and who knows when that will be? Friend request them on facebook. Don't get offended if they just want to keep FB personal. Some people don't want to mesh their personal and business. I'm just here to tell you, that if you DO want to network on FB, we're out there waiting to network with you. So fan their business pages, comment on their posts, and really get to know what their business is all about. Guess what... they'll probably do the same to you.

Wilmington is a fantastically supportive city for local businesses. So Buy Local Ilm, and SUPPORT local ILM, because they want to support you to.

Networking... not just for Professionals??

We all are sick of experiencing the job market. Many recent grads are having a difficult time getting jobs... even entry level. Professionals that have been in their fields for 10-20 or more years are getting laid off. We're all sick of it.

So... one solution... we network. We go out and meet more people who may know of jobs that are out there... or perhaps they will meet us, love us, and want to create a job opening just for us (sure).

For those college students... why not get a JUMP on the job market by getting your name out there before you graduate?

Back in October, we had a Business After Hours sponsored by Front Street Brewery. UNCW students Brittney Sito and Bobby Bryson attended even though they aren't "technically" professionals... yet. However, with graduation right around the corner, it was impressive to see the two of them out amongst the crowd... and confident, too!

What a fantastic idea to get to know people in your town... and hopefully in your potentional field. They were smart enough to realize that it really is about who you know a lot of times.

Students, I'm sure your college resume is great... but that won't always... in fact, it usually won't- get you the job. So why not get ahead of the game and put yourself out there... get comfortable talking to people in the professional world. Worst case scenario, you have a good time and you meet some great people.

So, UNCW, Cape Fear, Miller-Motte, and surrounding schools-- come out and network.

Downtown Crime

Downtown crime, nightlife and safety have been the talk of the town lately. Candidates are dishing out their views for the upcoming elections, and a taskforce made up of business owners, police officers and city officials has come up with several nightlife regulations for the city council to consider. So, the StarNews is setting out to find out whether downtown Wilmington really does have a crime problem and how crime affects businesses in times of the day. We want your help! Young professionals are a key component of nightlife, and I know several of you have your own viewpoints about downtown Wilmington.

Here's how you can help this very important StarNews project:

1) Share YOUR perspective! If you're out and about downtown between now and Nov. 8 (when the project will run in the paper) - snap a photo of any downtown scene at any time of the day. Upload that photo to a group called "Downtown Scene" on Flickr - www.flickr.com/groups/wilmdowntown ... and be sure to include the location, time and date of the photo. It's free to join Flickr (you just need to create an account or sign in if you have one). The photos will be placed on a map of downtown. Image ideas could include business merchants and patrons, nightlife scenes, farmers market or early morning scenes, bars, etc. You can upload photos you've already taken -- just make sure you include the date and location.

2) Come to a public community forum on downtown crime, business and life! Our own Jackie Willse will serve on a panel along with a police officer, business representative, bar owner, city official and others. Anyone can ask questions or state their opinions about downtown crime, safety and nightlife. Plus, it'll be an education opportunity to learn about how some city decisions could affect you in the future.When: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11Where: 3rd floor room of Front Street Brewery (a new room for banquets, meetings, etc.) - 9 N. Networking Tips: Don't be that guy

Seeing as tonight is another big Wilmington Young Professional event, I wanted to pass on words of advice for those of you that are either new to networking events or need a little help.

1. If you are planning to bring a stack of business cards to pass out, DON'T.
Yes, bring your cards, but don't walk around to everyone and pass them out without engaging in real conversation. Don't be that guy.

2. It's not a numbers game.
There's no possible way that you can make meaningful connections when there are 200 people at an event, so don't try. At the end of the event, you'll barely remember any names or what they do. You'll leave with a stack of business cards that will sit in your desk drawer.

3. Have fun.
People only hang out with people they have fun with, right? Well, guess what. Same goes for business. People like doing business with people that they like. So, make friends.

4. Don't act interested, BE interested.
Yes, people can tell when you're not really interested in them or what they do. We've all seen the glazed over look, so don't even try. We know when you're not listening to us and just waiting for your turn. So, don't be that guy.

5. Don't try to do business tonight.
Networking is not about doing business, its about forming relationships. If it happens, great-- but don't get discouraged when you don't feel like you have gotten strong leads, because even if the people you meet tonight don't have a use for your business, guess what-- they know people, too. And if you're interested in them, they'll be interested in helping you.

6. Have a "post game" strategy.
Let's face it, most of the time those business cards sit on your desk for weeks and then by the time you look at them again, you've forgotten who they were. "Was that the tall guy...or was..."
Don't let it get to that point.
Friend the people you meet on facebook. Follow them on twitter. Stay connected after tonight, because that's when the REAL networking starts. Invite them to other events/socials. Make friends.

So... have a good time, enjoy the food, crack jokes, don't be nervous... and PLEASE, don't be that guy. :)

Hewitt Business After Hours-- Friday, July 24th, 2009

Hi everyone! Welcome to the first post for Wilmington Young Professionals!

5 months after the creation of the group, we have grown to 462 members and have had many successful socials and volunteer events.

Our most recent social was at Hewitt, a new interior design store located in Lumina Station.

Thanks to Abe and Sarah Wellons for providing the location and food and to Market Street Advisors and Fuss Budget Promotions for providing the delicious Front Street Brewery beer.

We had great door prizes from Market Street Advisors, Fuss Budget, Keen Solutions Group, and Kim Brumsey Organic Skin Care.

This was one of our most successful events due to the fact that we were had the whole place to ourselves, allowing some true mingling.

This blog will serve as our "newsletter". It will highlight member business, post pictures and comments on previous socials, and discuss topics relevent to young professionals in Wilmington.
